How to Cancel Sonara (And Get a Refund) in 2026

Short answer: Sonara’s $2.95 trial runs 14 days and auto-converts on Day 15 to $23.95 charged every 4 weeks. Cancel from your Sonara account before Day 14 ends and you stop the conversion entirely. Sonara advertises a money-back guarantee during the trial period, so if you are still inside it, cancel first and request the refund second.

The order matters more than the wording. Cancelling and requesting a refund are two separate actions, and doing them in the wrong order is how people end up paying for a cycle they never intended to start.

Disclosure: I am the founder of FastApply, which competes with Sonara. This guide is written to get you out cleanly whether or not you ever look at our product. The Sonara figures come from its own public pricing page.

What Day Are You On?

Find your row before you do anything else. The right move is different in each case.

If you are on Day 13 or 14 and reading this at night, stop reading and go cancel. You can come back for the refund language afterward. Every other section here keeps.

Step 1: Cancel the Subscription First

Do this before you write to anyone. A cancellation that is already in place changes the conversation from “please stop charging me” to “please refund the charge you already took,” which is a much shorter argument.

Cancel from inside your Sonara account, in the subscription or billing area of the dashboard. If you cannot locate the control, do not keep hunting past the deadline. Email Sonara support with an explicit cancellation instruction instead, and treat that email as your cancellation. A timestamped written request sent before Day 15 is the evidence that matters if the charge lands anyway.

Whichever route you use, capture proof: a screenshot of the confirmation screen, or the sent email with its timestamp. If a charge appears later, this is what resolves it.

Do not simply delete the app, remove your resume, or stop logging in. None of those cancel a subscription. The billing relationship is separate from your usage of the product, and an unused account bills exactly the same as a heavily used one.

Step 2: Request the Refund, in Writing, With Specifics

Sonara advertises a money-back guarantee during the trial period. That makes a trial-window refund request straightforward rather than adversarial, so keep the tone plain.

Write to support with four things in the message: your account email, the exact charge amount and date, an explicit statement that you have already cancelled, and one concrete sentence about why the product did not fit. Something like:

I signed up for the $2.95 trial on [date] and cancelled on [date], within the 14-day trial period. I am requesting a refund under the money-back guarantee. My account email is [email]. The tool did not surface matches in my field, so I did not use the service beyond initial setup.

The concrete reason matters. “It did not work for me” invites a troubleshooting reply and a delay. “It surfaced four matches in three weeks, none in my field” is specific, unarguable, and tends to be actioned rather than debated. Name the actual gap: no matches in your industry, no coverage of the boards where your roles are posted, or seniority mismatch.

Send it from the email address on the account. Refund requests from a different address get held up on identity verification, and the clock does not stop while that happens.

Step 3: If You Are Already Past Day 15

The trial guarantee is designed for the trial. Once the first $23.95 has been charged, you are asking for a discretionary refund rather than invoking a stated policy, and the answer depends on how much of the cycle you used.

Ask anyway, and ask early. A request sent two days after the charge, citing near-zero usage, lands very differently from one sent three weeks in. Cancel first so that no further cycle is pending, state the charge date, and ask specifically for a refund of the current period.

If a full refund is declined, ask whether a partial or prorated credit is available. Subscription businesses frequently have that discretion even when the posted policy does not mention it, and the worst outcome of asking is the answer you already have.

Step 4: If the Annual Plan Is the Problem

Sonara’s annual plan is $5.95/month billed as roughly $71.40 upfront for twelve months. If you bought it and then landed a job in month two, you are in the hardest position on this page, because you prepaid for a service that has not failed, you simply no longer need it.

Cancel auto-renewal immediately regardless of what happens with the refund, so that a second year cannot begin. Then make the prorated request, plainly: you used two months of twelve and are asking for the balance. Do not overstate a product fault that was not there. A short, honest request about a completed job search is more likely to be granted than a manufactured complaint, and it is the accurate account of what happened.

Step 5: If Sonara Declines and You Believe the Charge Was Wrong

A card dispute is the last resort, not the opening move, and it should only follow a genuine attempt to resolve directly. Vendors are given the chance to respond to disputes, and a documented refusal on your side of the record is what makes the dispute credible.

Dispute only where you have a factual basis: you cancelled inside the trial window and were charged anyway, or you were charged after a confirmed cancellation. Bring the cancellation timestamp and the support thread. Do not dispute simply because you changed your mind about a service that was delivered as described, which is not what the chargeback mechanism is for and tends to fail on the merits.

The Billing Detail Most People Miss

Sonara’s standard plan bills every 4 weeks, not monthly. Those are not the same thing.

A year has 365 days. Divided by a 28-day cycle, that is 13.04 charges per year rather than 12. At $23.95 per cycle, the real annual cost is about $311, plus the $2.95 trial entry, for roughly $314 in a first year. A flat $23.95 monthly plan would total $287.40. The 4-week cadence is a legal and common billing pattern, and it is a difference of about $24 a year that never appears on the pricing page.

It also means your renewal date moves earlier in the calendar every cycle. If you are keeping the subscription for now but plan to cancel later, do not set a reminder for “the 12th of next month.” Set it for 26 days from today, and reset it each cycle. Full breakdown in Sonara pricing 2026.

What to Switch To

The specific thing that went wrong should drive the replacement, not the price tag.

If the problem was the card-on-file trial. The structural fix is a tool that lets you test before payment details exist. FastApply’s free tier is 5 applications with no card, so there is no conversion date to defend against. Loopcv’s free-forever plan is the other genuine no-card option, capped at a small number of applications per day.

If the problem was thin matching in your field. This is the most common complaint across every auto-apply tool, and it is usually a coverage problem rather than a matching problem: the roles you want are posted on ATS platforms the tool does not reach. Check where your target roles actually live before choosing. FastApply covers 150+ ATS form variations including Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby, which is where a large share of US corporate postings are completed.

If the problem was cost. Be careful here. Sonara’s annual plan at $71.40 is genuinely one of the cheapest twelve months available, so if cost alone drove you out, most alternatives are more expensive per month, not less. LazyApply Basic at $99/year is the nearest volume-first competitor, though it locks you in annually and covers a narrower set of boards.

If you have landed a job. Cancel everything, including the tools you liked. Come back when you need them. The single most common regret in this category is an auto-renewal that fired months after a search ended.

What Not to Do

Do not let it ride “one more cycle” to decide. The 4-week cadence means the next charge is closer than a monthly plan would put it, and the decision does not get easier with more data at $23.95 a look.

Do not cancel your card to stop the billing. It stops the charge and leaves the account in an unresolved state, which can send the balance to collections in some subscription setups and complicates any refund you were owed. Cancel the subscription properly.

Do not delete your account before the refund resolves. You will need access to the billing history and the account email to substantiate the request.

Do not skip the written record. Even where a cancellation goes through in the dashboard with no friction, keep the confirmation. The cost of keeping it is zero and the value if a charge appears anyway is the whole refund.

After You Cancel

Export your application history before access lapses. Whatever Sonara logged about which roles it applied to and when is the only record you have of applications submitted on your behalf, and you will want it when a recruiter emails about a role you do not remember applying to.

Then check your card statement 30 days later. Cancellations occasionally fail silently, and the difference between catching that at one cycle and at four cycles is about $72.
