Data Analyst Jobs for Freshers in 2026: Skills, Salary and Where to Apply
Short answer: Fresher data analyst jobs in India ask for five things, in this order: Excel, SQL, one BI tool (Power BI or Tableau), Python with pandas, and basic statistics. They pay about Rs 4 to 4.5 lakh a year on average, with a typical spread of Rs 3.5 to 6 lakh, though every public source for that figure rests on a small sample. The roles are posted on Naukri under titles like “data analyst” and “MIS executive”, on LinkedIn under “junior data analyst” and “analyst trainee”, and on the careers pages of the IT services and analytics firms that hire freshers in batches. Two finished projects beat any certificate.
Data analyst is the single role our support visitors ask us to find most often by name. The requests come in the same shape: a recent graduate, Excel and some SQL, a certificate from an online course, and no replies. This post is about closing the gap between that profile and the profile that gets a test invite.
What a fresher data analyst actually does
The job title promises insight. The first year delivers reporting. A fresher analyst at an IT services firm, a bank, an e-commerce company or an analytics consultancy spends most days on four things:
- Pulling data with SQL for someone who asked a question in a meeting.
- Cleaning spreadsheets: fixing dates, removing duplicates, reconciling two exports that should match and do not.
- Maintaining a dashboard or a weekly report that a manager reads on Monday.
- Answering ad hoc questions: “why did orders drop in Pune last week?”
That is not a complaint. It is the training. Every senior analyst did the same, and the freshers who get promoted are the ones who automate their own reports and start asking the follow-up question before the manager does. If you expected to build predictive models in month two, that is a data science role, and it is a different market with far fewer fresher seats.
Related titles cover the same work: MIS executive, reporting analyst, business analyst (at many Indian companies this means the same reporting job), associate analyst, analytics trainee. Search all of them. Our fresher jobs guide explains why three titles beat one.
The skills postings ask for, in learning order
Read fifty fresher analyst postings on Naukri and the same five skills appear, in roughly the same frequency. Learn them in this order, because each one is tested before the next one matters.
1. Excel. Pivot tables, lookups (XLOOKUP or INDEX and MATCH), text cleaning, conditional formatting, and the discipline of keeping raw data on one sheet and calculations on another. Nearly every fresher analyst test starts with an Excel exercise, and MIS roles are mostly Excel.
2. SQL. Joins, GROUP BY, filtering with WHERE and HAVING, subqueries, and the basics of window functions. Most technical interviews for analyst roles are SQL interviews. If you learn one thing properly, learn this.
3. One BI tool. Power BI or Tableau, not both. Build one dashboard from a public dataset that answers three questions a manager would ask, and publish it. This is the piece of your portfolio a recruiter can look at in thirty seconds.
4. Python with pandas. Reading files, cleaning, reshaping, merging, simple charts. Product companies and analytics firms expect it. MIS and reporting roles at traditional companies usually do not.
5. Statistics basics. Averages versus medians, distributions, sampling, what a confidence interval means, the logic of an A/B test. This is what separates an analyst from a report maker in an interview, and it takes the least time to learn.
Rough time, if you study a few hours a day: Excel in two to three weeks, SQL in four to six, a BI tool in three to four, pandas in four to six, statistics in two to three. That is a four-month plan for someone starting from a non-technical degree. A B.Tech or B.Sc graduate with some exposure can compress it.
What a fresher data analyst earns
Every public salary figure for fresher analysts in India rests on a small sample, so here they are with the samples attached.
| Source | Figure | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox, data analyst with 0 to 1 year of experience | Average Rs 4,38,733 a year; typical range Rs 3,52,201 to 5,25,266 | 32 salary reports, as reported in an August 2026 write-up |
| Glassdoor, “data analyst freshers” in Bengaluru | Average Rs 4,50,000 a year | 2 submissions |
| 2026 salary guides summarising Glassdoor and Indeed data | Rs 3.5 to 6 lakh a year for freshers | Not stated |
| Glassdoor, data analysts at all experience levels (July 2026) | Average about Rs 6.5 lakh a year | Larger sample, but not a fresher figure |
Read that as: a fresher analyst offer of Rs 3.5 to 4.5 lakh is normal, Rs 5 lakh and above is a good outcome, and anything under Rs 3 lakh is an MIS or data entry role wearing an analyst title. Mass recruiters offer fixed fresher packages that sit at the lower end of the band; analytics firms and product companies pay towards the top but hire far fewer freshers.
When a form asks for expected CTC, enter a number inside that band in the units the form uses (4.5 for lakhs, 450000 for rupees). Current CTC is 0. Our guide to current and expected CTC for freshers covers the traps in those two fields.
Where fresher analyst roles are posted, and what to search
Naukri. The largest volume. Search “data analyst”, “MIS executive” and “reporting analyst” with the experience filter at 0 to 1 years, and set a job alert for each. Naukri allows 50 applications a day, which is more than the number of fresh analyst postings you will find on most days. Our Naukri auto apply guide covers the apply flow and the screening questions Naukri asks.
LinkedIn. Search “junior data analyst”, “analyst trainee” and “associate analyst” with the entry-level filter. This is where product companies and startups post, and where a published dashboard in your Featured section gets noticed.
Indeed. “Data analyst fresher” and “reporting analyst”. Smaller companies and local roles, often with shorter processes.
Company careers pages. The firms that post fresher analyst roles most often, from what we see in listings: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Genpact, EXL, WNS, Mu Sigma, Fractal, Tiger Analytics, LatentView and ZS. Those names come from common postings, not from a ranking; check each careers page for the current drive, because intake dates and eligibility change.
Internshala. “Data analytics internship”. A paid analytics internship is the most reliable door into the first role, and many convert.
Unstop. Case competitions and analytics challenges run by companies. A placed entry is a resume line that gets read.

A portfolio that gets a fresher past the resume screen
A certificate says you watched the videos. A project says you can do the work. Recruiters screening fresher analysts know the difference, and the postings that mention “projects” are telling you what they will look at.
Build three, and no more than three:
- A cleaned dataset with a write-up. Take a messy public dataset (government open data, Kaggle), document every cleaning decision, and publish the before and after. This shows the skill employers actually need on day one.
- A dashboard. One Power BI or Tableau dashboard answering three business questions, published online, with a paragraph on what the data says.
- A SQL analysis. A set of queries against a public database with the questions, the queries and the answers, on GitHub.
Each project gets a one-page write-up: the question, the data, what you did, what you found, what you would do next. Link the three from the Projects section of your resume. The resume for freshers guide shows where projects go and how to describe them with numbers.
Certifications help a little. The Google Data Analytics certificate and Microsoft’s PL-300 (Power BI) are the two that recruiters recognise. Put them in a Certifications section below Projects, not above.
What the assessment looks like
Most fresher analyst processes run in this order, and knowing it saves you from preparing the wrong thing.
- An online test. Aptitude and reasoning, sometimes basic SQL or Excel questions in multiple choice. Mass recruiters use this to cut the list.
- A SQL test. Three to five queries against a sample schema, usually with joins and aggregation. Practise on any free SQL practice site until joins and GROUP BY are automatic.
- An Excel test. Clean a sheet, build a pivot, answer questions from it. Timed.
- A case question. “Sales fell 12% last quarter. How would you find out why?” They want a structured answer: define the metric, split it by segment, time and region, check data quality, then form a hypothesis.
- An HR round. Notice period (Immediate), expected CTC (inside the band), location and shift flexibility.
Applying: the fields, the volume, the tools
A fresher analyst search is a volume search with a tight filter. The postings are similar, the forms are repetitive, and the shortlist goes to the early, complete applications.
- Set the fresher fields once and reuse them. Notice period: Immediate. Current CTC: 0. Expected CTC: inside the Rs 3.5 to 5 lakh band for your target. Our guide to notice period on applications covers the wording.
- Use three titles and two cities. “Data analyst”, “MIS executive”, “junior data analyst”, and the two cities you would actually move to, plus remote if you will take it.
- Apply within 48 hours of posting, sorted by date, newest first.
- Keep the resume ATS-clean. Single column, standard headings, a text-based PDF. The ATS resume format guide covers what each application system can and cannot read.
- Count replies weekly. If 50 applications bring no test invite, the problem is the resume or the portfolio, not the volume.
If you would rather not fill the same form fifty times, FastApply applies on Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor and on the application systems behind company portals, with your fresher fields filled the same way each time and a review mode for the first ten. The free plan covers 5 applications with no card. Paid plans in India are Rs 599 a month, or Rs 433 a month on the 90-day plan.
FAQ
-
Can a fresher get a data analyst job in India? Yes. IT services firms, banks, e-commerce companies and analytics consultancies hire fresher analysts in batches, mostly for reporting and SQL work. The shortlist goes to candidates with Excel, SQL, one BI tool and two or three finished projects.
-
What skills does a fresher data analyst need? Excel (pivots and lookups), SQL (joins and GROUP BY), one BI tool (Power BI or Tableau), Python with pandas for product-company roles, and basic statistics. Learn them in that order, because each is tested before the next matters.
-
What is the salary of a fresher data analyst in India? About Rs 4 to 4.5 lakh a year on average, with a typical spread of Rs 3.5 to 6 lakh. AmbitionBox puts the 0 to 1 year average at Rs 4,38,733 from 32 reports and Glassdoor’s Bengaluru fresher figure is Rs 4,50,000 from 2 submissions, so treat these as directional.
-
Which companies hire fresher data analysts? From common postings: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Genpact, EXL, WNS, Mu Sigma, Fractal, Tiger Analytics, LatentView and ZS, plus banks and e-commerce companies. Check each careers page for the current drive, since dates and eligibility change.
-
Is a degree required for a data analyst job? Most fresher postings ask for any graduate degree, with engineering, statistics, economics, commerce and mathematics preferred. A portfolio of finished projects matters more than the subject of the degree for most entry-level roles.
-
How many data analyst jobs should a fresher apply to? As many as pass a tight filter, which is usually 5 to 15 a day across Naukri, LinkedIn and company portals. Apply within 48 hours of posting, and if 50 applications bring no test invite, fix the resume or portfolio before sending more.
Conclusion
The fresher analyst market rewards a narrow, finished profile: five skills in order, three projects online, one clean resume, and applications sent early to the boards and portals that actually carry the roles. The pay is modest at the start, around Rs 4 lakh, and it climbs quickly for the analysts who turn reporting into questions. Build the projects first. Then apply at volume.
